Interesting facts about Port Campbell

Port Campbell is a small coastal town in Victoria, Australia with a population of only around 300 people. Despite its size, there are many interesting facts about this charming town.

1. The town was named after a clipper ship, the "Port Campbell", which ran aground on the nearby cliffs in 1878.

2. Port Campbell is famous for its Twelve Apostles, a series of limestone stacks that rise out of the ocean. However, only eight of the original twelve apostles remain standing today.

3. The nearby Loch Ard Gorge is named after a shipwreck that occurred in 1878. The only two survivors were a young boy and girl, who were washed up onto the beach at the base of the cliffs.

4. The Great Ocean Road, which passes through Port Campbell, is one of the most scenic drives in the world. It was built by soldiers who returned from World War I and is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the war.

5. Port Campbell has its own annual music festival, held in February each year. The festival attracts both local and international performers and is a popular event for both locals and visitors.

6. The town is also home to a number of historic buildings, including the Port Campbell Presbyterian Church, which was built in 1880, and the Port Campbell Public Hall, which was built in 1913.

7. Port Campbell is a popular destination for whale watching, with the Southern Right Whale and the Humpback Whale regularly seen in the waters off the coast.

8. The town has its own golf course, which offers stunning views of the ocean and the surrounding countryside.

9. The local beach is popular for swimming and surfing, with a number of surf schools offering lessons for beginners.

10. Port Campbell is also a great place to try some of the local seafood, with fresh fish and chips a popular choice for many visitors.
